STAR is the New York State School Tax Relief program that provides an exemption, or a rebate check, on a portion of school property taxes. There are 2 types of STAR, Basic and Enhanced. Please read the information below carefully, as it will provide answers to many of your frequently asked questions.
**Message for new homeowners and homeowners who want to switch to the STAR credit**
For new homeowners who are NOT currently receiving Basic or Enhanced STAR, OR if you are currently receiving the STAR exemption but wish to switch to a STAR credit, you must apply directly with New York State Department of Taxation and Finance at https://www.tax.ny.gov/star/ (518) 457-2036. If qualified, New York State will send you a STAR credit in the form of a check, rather than a property tax exemption.
**Message for current STAR recipients**
If you are already receiving the Basic STAR exemption, there is nothing for you to do. If you currently receive the Enhanced STAR exemption, you do not have to file a renewal application with us as long as New York State Department of Taxation and Finance can continue to verify your income eligibility.
NOTE: If you are currently receiving the Basic STAR exemption and believe you qualify for the Enhanced STAR exemption, New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (NYS DTF) has chosen to simplify the STAR program for NYS homeowners, this means they are no longer requiring homeowners to apply with our office for the Enhanced STAR exemption. Because of this, all STAR forms have been removed from the website and will no longer be accepted by the Assessor’s Office.
NYS DTF will notify you and our office if you qualify for an Enhanced STAR exemption and we will update our records to reflect their determination. If NYS DTF needs more information to determine eligibility, they will send you a letter in the mail.
Beginning in 2026, the Enhanced STAR income limit will apply only to the combined incomes of the owners and their spouses who primarily reside on the property.
