The Town of Ossining is looking to appoint Town Residents to the following Volunteer Boards/Committees.

Board of Assessment Review: 1 appointment for a five-year term & 1 alternate appointment

The Town of Ossining is seeking dedicated community members to serve on the Board of Assessment Review (BAR). This is a vital role for residents interested in local government, property valuation, and ensuring tax equity within our community.

The BAR is a quasi-judicial body that hears formal grievances from property owners regarding their assessments. Grievance Day is the third Tuesday in June. If you have a background in real estate, law, appraisal, or simply a strong commitment to fair governance, we encourage you to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Hear Grievances: Attend annual Grievance Day in June to listen to presentations from property owners contesting their assessments
  • Review Evidence: Evaluate documentation provided by both the petitioner and the Assessor’s Office to determine if an assessment should be lowered
  • Impartial Deliberation: Work collaboratively with other board members to reach fair, unbiased decisions based on New York State Real Property Tax Law

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be a resident of the Town of Ossining
  • A basic understanding of property valuation or real estate is helpful, but not required
  • Mandatory Training: New members must attend a brief state-mandated training session provided by the Westchester County Tax Commission

Environmental Advisory Committee: 4 appointments, each for a five-year term

The EAC usually meets the first Monday of each month. The committee advises on the development, management, and protection of the Town’s natural resources.

EAC members are appointed by the Board of the Town of Ossining and serve five-year terms with the charge to:

  • Help to build awareness and support for the development, management, and protection of Ossining's natural resources.
  • When needed, draft environmental ordinances, for consideration by the Town of Ossining, designed to provide protection for natural resources.
  • Participate in environmental reviews of proposed projects before the Planning Board to ensure adherence to Town's ordinances, such as the Tree Protection, Wetland Protection, Steep Slope, and other environmental Town ordinances.

No prior experience is necessary, however, a desire to volunteer, help protect, and preserve our local resources are key.

Recreation Advisory Board: 1 Village of Briarcliff Manor resident appointment for a three-year term & 1 Town of Ossining resident appointment for a three-year term

The Recreation Advisory Board is comprised of Town of Ossining, Village of Ossining, and Village of Briarcliff Manor residents. The Advisory Board advises the Recreation Superintendent and Town and Village Boards on park facilities and recreational programs. The Advisory Board meets on the first Monday of every month from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Community Center.

Zoning Board of Appeals: 1 alternate appointment for a one-year term

Requisite experience includes: architecture, engineering, land use, development, or another related field. Applicants must be a resident of the Town of Ossining, residency in the Unincorporated Town of Ossining is preferred.

The Zoning Board of Appeals hears applications relating to:

  • Interpretation of Zoning Code or Zoning Map
  • Variance with regard to permitted uses
  • Variance with regard to area requirements for building lots
  • Special Permits as dictated by zoning district

The Zoning Board usually meets the first and/or third Monday of the month. However, the Board is convened only if there is an application on file two weeks prior to that date. Meetings are held at the John-Paul Rodrigues Operations Center, 101 Route 9A, at 7:30 PM.
